About Judge James Shapiro

Active with the Justinian Society of Lawyers, Judge James Shapiro possesses more than three decades of experience in courtroom settings. He currently works as a circuit judge in the Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Chicago. Judge James Shapiro initially joined the court in 2007 and spent five years adjudicating diverse criminal and civil cases, including those involving commercial litigation, traffic incidents, and landlord/tenant disputes. He subsequently stepped down from the bench and spent several years in private practice focused on defense of federal and state criminal cases. Among the representative matters he handled were DUIs, white collar crimes, and felonies. Drawing on intimate knowledge of the circuit court, he represented clients in obtaining favorable settlements. Mr. Shapiro additionally served as arbitrator and mediator with Resolute Systems and worked to resolve complex employment discrimination, personal injury, and commercial disputes. He has also provided legal services pro bono to members of the indigent Polish community in Chicago’s Northwest Side. Mr. Shapiro has received the "Highly Qualified” rating from the Chicago Bar Association, its top rating.
